Violent Crime The Federal Bureau of Investigation defines violent crime as murder, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. Every year, the FBI collects data from law enforcement agencies across the country and estimates the number of violent crimes for the Uniform Crime Report (UCR). This report also includes estimates of property offenses, drug offenses, and other offenses, such as illegal use of weapons, drunken driving, and vice. The California Attorney General's Office prepares extensive statistical information that is available online. For statistical data and charts on crime in California visit the Criminal Justice Statistics Center (http://www.caag.state.ca.us/cjsc/index.htm). The Attorney General also prepares extensive statistical information about crime in each California County and most cities within each county. For finding information about crime in Kern County visit AG Statistics (http://www.caag.state.ca.us/cjsc/datatabs.htm). All violent crimes should be reported to the appropriate local law enforcement agency, which in most cases would be either the Bakersfield Police Department or the Kern County Sheriff’s Department.
